What is it about portraiture? Like landscape painting, there can be a connection between you and the sitter. Is it the search for some inner meaning from the inner self?

Truly it can't be as complicated as that. But I must say when you find the right model in the right setting or situation there is that spiritual connection of becoming one with the moment. Every face or figure is a map to where and why. Some paintings are wonderfully isolated of figure and form and in other cases a character justs demands to be there. Except for a few commissions, I usually paint people I know. It is their facial character that I want to interpret. Their map will take me to where I want to be. Their soul will guide me to where I want to go. After all, painting is not a trip but a journey ....into the self.
